EXCITING OUTDOOR ADVENTURES

VIRVATNET LAKE

A hike to Virvatnet lake can be extended by continuing along the Vindelvaggileden, a long well-marked trail with cabins en route, to the village of Ammarnes in Sweden (a total distance of 90 km).

To reach the trailhead for Virvatnet, head north on highway E6 from Krokstrand. After 2 km, take the turnoff to Virvassdalen and drive 20 km up the valley until the end of the road. A 5-km hike along the well-marked trail takes you Virvatnet lake.

This easy hike makes a great family outing.

Virvatnet lake offers great fishing, and has lots of char which make for an excellent campfire dinner. The Norwegian Trekking Association (DNT) has a cabin by the lake that you can book in advance.

A FISHING TRIP TO BLEREK-VASSDRAGET

To reach this trailhead, follow the driving instructions for Virvatnet, but stop farther down the valley, about 15 km after your turnoff from highway E6. The trailhead is at the parking lot by Kaffebekken creek.

The Blerek watershed consists of many lakes, tarns and rivers – and there are fish in most of these. Trout is your most likely catch, but there are also char. The area is managed by Statsskog. A fishing license must be purchased.

There is a cabin at Blerekbu that may be rented. From the trailhead at the parking lot, allow about 1.5 hours for the hike to Blerekbu.

ANDFJELLET – SUMMIT HIKE

The trailhead for this hike is just 5 km into Virvassdalen. The forest road is blocked, but you can easily ride a bike or hike to the top.

The 5-km route is rather steep, climbing 700 metres. Your reward at the summit is a magnificent panorama in every direction.

On a clear summer evening you can even experience the Midnight Sun!

BREDEK, GRANNESET AND STORMDALEN

This hike starts at Storvoll, 11 km south of Krokstrand. From highway E6, take the turnoff towards Storvoll and park just before the bridge that crosses the Bjøllåga river. Bredek and Granneset, two mountain farms that date back to the 19th century, are situated within the Saltfjellet-Svartisen National Park.

The excursion is a wonderful way to combine beautiful mountain scenery with a cultural experience.

If you yearn for a longer and more demanding trip, we recommend Stormdalen. This beautiful sheltered valley is very lush and has some amazing flora. The hike lets you experience some of the finest scenery that Rana has to offer.

THE NASA SILVER MINES

From Krokstrand, head north on highway E6 and after 7k take the turnoff at Randalsvollen. After you cross the bridge and drive up a small hill, the trailhead is clearly marked. Park on the side of the construction road.

A 7-km hike takes you across the border into Sweden and to the old silver mines. Please allow five hours for a round-trip hike. The Swedes started mining Nasafjell as early as 1635. The area is rich in cultural monuments that tell us much about their mining operations.

This easy hike through the open countryside follows a well-marked trail.
